FAQ's

Why do individuals, couples, and families typically seek therapy?

People come to therapy for various reasons, including:

  • Mental health challenges: Anxiety, depression, and feelings of being lost or disconnected.

  • Relationship issues: Difficulty forming or maintaining healthy relationships; conflicts with family, partners, or friends.

  • Emotional expression: Struggles with expressing emotions authentically or trusting others.

  • Anger and conflict resolution: Understanding anger and addressing unresolved conflicts, often rooted in past experiences.

  • Personal growth: Developing healthier responses to recurring problems and improving intimacy, joy, and life satisfaction.

  • Major life transitions: Events like divorce, breakups, marriage, parenthood, or other significant milestones may require some extra mental health support.

  • Breaking patterns: Addressing unhealthy behaviors and creating a more meaningful, balanced life.

Therapy offers a supportive space to explore these challenges and move toward a more fulfilling future.

In what ways is psychotherapy typically found to be helpful?

Research shows that psychotherapy is highly effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, often to the same degree as medication. It can help people:

  • Gain deeper psychological awareness and insight

  • Improve communication skills

  • Resolve both internal and external conflicts

  • Reduce emotional distress

  • Enhance social, relational, or vocational functioning

  • Pursue personal growth and development

  • Heal from trauma or abuse

Psychotherapy isn’t just about feeling better in the moment; it’s about creating lasting, meaningful change in your life.

What should I expect at my intake session?

At your intake session, we’ll spend time getting to know each other. You’ll share your story, and I’ll ask questions to understand your goals and what brought you to therapy. I’ll also explain how we can work together to help you achieve those goals. It’s a time for you to ask questions and get comfortable with the process. This session is all about setting the foundation for a strong therapeutic relationship and outlining the direction for our work together.

What if I need or want to consider medication as an adjunct to psychotherapy?

Medication can be a valuable tool in managing symptoms like depression or anxiety. If you feel that medication may help you, I will assist you in exploring this option and can provide referrals to psychiatrists for consultation. If you prefer alternative treatments, such as homeopathy, I can also offer recommendations based on your needs. We’ll work together to find the best approach for you.

How long is a typical psychotherapy session, and how often will I meet with my therapist?

Sessions are generally 50 minutes long and take place on a bi-weekly basis. However, depending on your needs and goals, we may decide to meet more frequently or extend the session time. Couples sessions are typically 75 minutes. Your therapy journey will be customized to fit your specific circumstances and preferences.

Therapy session discussion

How many sessions should I attend, and how long will therapy last?

The length of therapy depends on several factors and varies for each individual. Key elements influencing the duration include:

  • Your goals for therapy

  • How frequently and consistently do you attend sessions

  • Your level of motivation for change

  • The type of concerns or issues being addressed

In general, recent situational stresses or problems can often be addressed in fewer sessions than longer-standing issues, or situations involving trauma or abuse. Longer-term goals can be pursued in “chapters” if you prefer.

Remember, therapy is a collaborative process; you are always in control of the pace and direction. We’ll work together to create a schedule and plan that feels right for you.

Do you offer teletherapy?

Yes, I offer teletherapy for your convenience. Whether you’re at home or on the go, you can access therapy through a secure online platform. Teletherapy is an effective way to engage in therapy, and I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about the process or setup.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, therapy is completely confidential. Everything you share with me during our sessions is private, with a few important exceptions: if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if there is a legal obligation to disclose certain information. I take confidentiality seriously and create a safe, trusting space for you to explore your feelings without fear of judgment or exposure.

How will I know if therapy is working?

Signs of progress can include:

  • Feeling more in control of your emotions.

  • Improved relationships and communication.

  • Reduced symptoms of anxiety or depression.

  • Gaining new insights and perspectives. â€‹â€‹

We’ll regularly check in on your progress and adjust our approach as needed to ensure you’re moving toward your goals.

What is an EMDR intensive?

An EMDR intensive is a focused, multi-hour session designed to address trauma or specific issues quickly and effectively. Intensives offer clients an opportunity to jump-start their healing journey and experience rapid relief of symptoms. Please reach out to see if you would be a good fit for an EMDR intensive.

What is a couples intensive?

Couples intensives are extended sessions for deep, concentrated work on relationship challenges. These intensives can create powerful breakthroughs in a short time.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

Your active participation makes a big difference in the progress you can make. By attending sessions regularly and being open during the process, you'll likely see the best results. If you’re dealing with challenges like substance use, it can be really beneficial to avoid using substances for at least 24 hours before your session. This way, you can approach the work with a clearer mind and get the most out of the experience.

I feel quite nervous about going to therapy. Is that okay?

Absolutely! It’s completely normal to feel nervous or apprehensive before starting therapy. Many people feel the same way, especially when talking about personal and vulnerable topics. I will work with you at your pace, creating a safe and supportive space where you can feel comfortable. You can share as much or as little as you’re ready to, and I’ll guide you through the process with patience and understanding.
